Knights of Columbus - Pennsylvania State Council

Coats for Kids

Since the program’s inception, the Knights of Columbus in the United States and Canada has given away more than 167,000 coats to children in need. Approximately 2,000 local Knights of Columbus councils have participated in their communities.

Planning a Coats of Kids Program

  • Does your Council participate?
  • Make Coats for Kids a project for the entire parish community
  • Assess the need in the community.
    • Pastors and Catholic school principals can be excellent resources in identifying children who would benefit from this program.
  • Use council funds or conduct targeted fund raisers to purchase needed coats.
    • Coat drives in the council or parish are great ways to supplement the coats purchased.
  • Schedule a distribution date, time, and location.
    • Parish halls, Catholic school gyms, or council homes all make good distribution sites.
  • Secure manpower.
    • Invite the entire parish community to participate.
  • Publicize the distribution among the recipients.
    • Also, advise the media, newsletters, social media sites, etc.

About Coats for Kids

The Knights of Columbus launched the Coats for Kids initiative so that every child in need would feel welcomed, cherished and protected. Since the program started in 2009, councils have purchased and distributed more than 306,000 new winter coats to children throughout North America and Canada.

Yet, countless children still need our help.

There are many different activities councils can do to get involved with this program. Consider “adopting” a school where you can host a Coats for Kids drive and other charitable activities throughout the year. Or, provide coats to your local police officers to hand out to children they encounter in their line of duty.

Coats can be purchased for $220 (including ground shipping) per case of twelve for orders shipped to addresses in the continental United States. For orders shipped outside the United States, the cost is $245 (including ground shipping).

Coats should be ordered through knightsgear.com. By placing your order through this site, you will have a shorter shipping time and be sent tracking information, allowing for a smoother coat-ordering experience.

Any council that conducts a Coats for Kids program, and meets the minimum requirements, will receive full credit for all Columbian Award (SP-7) requirements in the Youth Activities category.
